Policeman fined RM6,000 for extortion
IPOH: A police lance corporal was fined RM6,000 by a magistrate’s court here after it found him guilty of extortion.
Magistrate Rohaida Ishak ordered Abdul Razif Sudin, 48, to pay the fine or serve six months’ jail in default.
Abdul Razif was charged with extorting RM4,000 from shopkeeper Md Hanapiah Shamsudin, 55, at 106, Jalan Terkukur, Kg Pasir Pengkalan Pegoh in Lahat.
He had claimed trial to the offence, which took place between 9.30pm on July 28, 2003, and 11.30am the following day.
Earlier during mitigation, defence counsel Ranjit Singh Sandhu asked the court to consider releasing his client on a bond of good behaviour or to impose a fine instead of sentencing him to jail.
Prosecuting officer Chief Insp Jasli Mohd Yusof told the court it had to take into account that the nature of the offence far outweighed any mitigating factor.
