80 computer sets seized from two cybercafes

By DHARMENDER SINGH

OVER 80 computer sets were confiscated from two cybercafes that allowed in schoolchildren, during a joint operation by police and the Klang Municipal Council (MPK) on Friday.

Klang police chief Asst Comm Mohammad Mat Yusop said the operation was conducted after the SMJK (C) Kwang Hua Parent-Teacher Association complained that students often played truant and visited the two outlets.

Mohammad said there were six students from SMJK (C) Kwang Hua and SMK Abdul Samad present when the first cybercafe was raided by the police and MPK enforcement officers and the outlet was found to be operating without a licence.

He said the owner was fined by the council for operating an illegal outlet and 60 computers were confiscated.

The second outlet, which had a licence, was also fined for allowing in eight students who were in uniform.

The eight were from SMJK (C) Kwang Hua and an international school.

“The students at the two outlets were aged between 12 and 15 but none were playing truant at the time as they are all from the morning session,” said Mohammad.

“But it is still worrisome as they were loitering at the outlets playing computer games and had not gone home at all after school was over,” he told reporters after the raid.

Mohammad said police had been conducting such raids regularly with MPK since early this year to stop students from visiting the outlets after getting complaints from many parents.

“We have conducted raids and confiscated computers in a number of outlets and we will continue to monitor the situation to make sure that the operators followed the law,” he said.

He said the police were also serious about closing down illegal outlets as these were often the ones that allowed games with excessive violence or pornographic materials.
