Fruitful banana venture

THE Nigerian Government has adopted Universiti Sains Malaysia’s (USM) ‘Going Banana’ programme that turns the tropical fruit waste into other by-products.
Penang Yang di-Pertua Negri Tun Abdul Rahman Abbas said other countries were interested in the success of the programme.
‘Going Banana’ is a research project initiated by the university lecturers and students in Balik Pulau to produce, on a large scale, banana culture tissues, banana flour and handicraft paper out of the fruit’s waste.
In his speech at the USM 38th Convocation Expo (Convex 2008) at Dewan Budaya yesterday, Abdul Rahman also called on the students to be creative and daring to be different to strive in the competitive global environment.

At the ceremony, Abdul Rahman also presented the Vice Chancellor’s Gold Medal Award to Industrial Technology graduate Mohd Zuaril Akimi Mohd Shaari for his excellence in academic and co-curriculum activities.
Mohd Zuaril Akimi, 22, was one of the two student leaders who were appointed as member of the National Unity Committee under the Prime Minister’s de-partment.
He said the award was a recognition of his effort.
Chemical Engineering first year student Mohammad Hazman Mustafa Bakray was presented with the Harvard Book Award for achieving a CGPA of 4.0 in his matriculation studies.
“I feel honoured but the award would call for a higher expectation of my future performance,” he said.
Asked to reveal his secret to his excellent academic performance, the 19-year-old student said he studied smart and not study hard.
