Study on what links genetics and disease
KUANTAN: The Malaysian Cohort (TMC) is embarking on a project to collect blood and urine samples and other information from 100,000 Malaysians nationwide.
The purpose of the project, organised with the co-operation with the Science, Technology and Innovation Ministry, is to study the relationship between human genetics and environmental exposure, including lifestyles, with the occurrence of diseases such as cancer, diabetes and high blood pressure.
Participants will be interviewed to obtain information on social demographics, medical background, physical activities, environmental exposure, work surroundings, alcohol and tobacco consumption as well as personal habits and food intake.
TMC is part of an international collaborative project involving seven Asia-Pacific countries namely Japan, Taiwan, South Korea, India, China, Singapore, the United States and Malaysia.
The project team be held in Kuantan from August 18 to 24 from 8am to 1pm at Dewan Air Putih, Lorong Air Putih 91.
Those aged between 40 and 65 years are welcome to participate but must make appointments.
There will be free biophysical check-ups including measurement of height, weight, body mass index, waist hip ratio, blood pressure, heart function, lung function (spirometry) and body composition.
Participants will be required to give answers to a questionnaire and small amounts of blood and urine.
The data will be put into a database and the biological specimens in a bio bank.
All information will be treated as confidential.
