RM236mil to upgrade Kampung Baru

By BAVANI M

THE Kuala Lumpur City Hall (DBKL) will spend a whopping RM236.5mil to upgrade the infrastructure in Kampung Baru.

The federal government is contributing RM100mil from the allocation under the 9th Malaysia Plan.

The projects to be carried out in phases include redevelopment programmes, rebuilding old dilapidated buildings and massive upgrading work.

Old and new: A striking image of Kg Baru and its environment.

One of the projects involves building a series of pedestrian walkways to improve connectivity and accessibility within the city.

The DBKL said a tender would be called soon to build the walkways connecting Dataran Merdeka to Chow Kit and Kampung Baru at a cost of RM31mil.

According to DBKL land development unit director Mohd Sahak Surip, the pedestrian project will be carried out in phases.

“We will start the first phase from Jalan Raja Alang to Kampung Baru and then proceed to other areas,’’ he said.

Sahak said the project would probably take off in November.

According to Sahak, the Jalan Raja Alang to Kampung Baru stretch covering 0.8km will be covered in certain parts and have rest areas along the way. It starts at the Jalan Tun Razak junction and ends at Mesjid Kampung Baru.

Moving on up: DBKL says dilapidated buildings like this one must be refurbished to reflect modern life.

A project recently completed is the upgrading and beautification of Jalan Raja Alang and Jalan Raja Muda Musa at a cost of RM33mil.

A total of RM50mil has been allocated to rebuild and upgrade a series of road networks connecting Jalan Tuanku Abdul Rahman and Jalan Tun Razak.

The DBKL has just completed Phase 1 of the project and is now in acquiring land before proceeding to Phase 2.

Two other projects on the drawing board are the rebuilding of the old Kampung Baru weekend market at a cost of RM100mil and the upgrading and beautifying of the area arround Jalan Raja Bot and Jalan Raja Hussein at a cost of RM22mil.

Federal Territories Minister Datuk Seri Zulhasnan Rafique had recently proposed to set up a Kampung Baru Development Corporation with a funding of RM100mil that will go towards the development of the village.

Zulhasnan had said that the proposed corporation would come under the purview of the DBKL once the Kuala Lumpur City Plan 2020 was approved and gazetted.
