Day care centre for senior citizens

THE Government may look into the possibility of setting up day centres for senior citizens at the Kuala Lumpur City Hall (DBKL) flats, with all basic necessities provided.
Deputy Federal Territories Minister Datuk M. Saravanan said the well-being of senior citizens must be looked into.
“We will look into the cost of managing these day care centres.”
“I will bring up the matter with the FT Minister at the next meeting,” he said at the launch of the National Council of Senior Citizens Organi-sations Malaysia’s (Nacscom) second day care centre at the Semarak flats in Setapak on Saturday.

The day care centre is part of a series of projects by Nacscom. They will be setting up three more day centres in Kota Damansara, Subang Jaya and Kota Kinabalu, Sabah. Nacscom will also be setting up a second old folks home for the hardcore poor in Kota Damansara.
Nacscom president Datuk Lum Kin Tuck said the Federal Government had allocated RM1.75mil to the council to help set up the centres last year.
He added that Nacscom had set up 13 Life Long Learning Centres with the help of IBM Sdn Bhd nationwide to encourage senior citizens to continue learning.
“The centres will help old people to spend their time fruitfully and in a healthy way,” he said.
The centre in Semarak flats will also look into the welfare of children and volunteers will organise English classes for the children. There will also be indoor games such as chess, dart, carom and others.
