Council gets tough on roadside traders
By STUART MICHAEL
NINE errant fruit traders along Jalan Besar Batu 20, Rawang, were fined RM1,000 and their stalls were demolished during the Selayang Municipal Council (MPS) raid yesterday.
The raid was carried out under the trading by-laws.
MPS enforcement department assistant officer Megat Ainul Fadzlil Ainul Fadzil said the raid was conducted because the illegal traders were stubborn and had ignored warnings.
“The MPS Licensing Department had issued compound notices to the traders two months ago to vacate the place by Oct 1.
Packing it up: Enforcement officers carting away the fruits at the stalls. “The traders refused to comply and still sold fruits along the roadside,” he said.
MPS had seized two full lorry loads of fruits and drinks from these traders and demolished three structures during the exercise involving some 80 MPS employees.
Megat added that the MPS Licensing Department meeting held on Sept 9 agreed not to renew the traders permits.
“They also agreed to the demolition of the stalls and the traders being fined for not abiding the law and our enforcement team was just following the directive,” he said.
He added that there were five stall owners who had licenses to trade there but the venue was not suitable and it had to be demolished for safety reasons.
“Because the fruits stalls were along the roadside, many accidents occurred, endangering road users.
“In fact, motorists from Rawang heading to Serendah had to face the traffic jam on a daily basis because of the fruit stalls.
“In the next two months, our enforcement department will go on raids to enforce the law throughout the Selayang constituency,” he said.
