Hidden gems at Ulu Yam Lama
By DEBBIE CHAN

DRIVING along the trunk roads in Selangor can sometimes be a surprising adventure especially when you stumble upon quaint little towns.
But unfortunately many of such towns are fading slowly, as young people begin to move to bigger cities and communities looking for opportunities elsewhere.
Ulu Yam Lama is one of those towns as the new road that was built two years ago diverted traffic coming from the nearest township Rawang to Ulu Yam Bahru bypassing the small one-road settlement where most of the wooden home structures still remained.
Ulu Yam Lama had long been an attraction for foodies as this was where the famous Lor Mee originated from.
In its heyday, the Lor Mee stalls along the main road of the town, Jalan Besar, did tremendous business on any given day of the week.
A helping hand: The Young News Network helping Oh (right) pluck vegetables in his farm. The Young News Network (YNN) members on their It’s Really All About Food trail recently decided to pay the small town a visit to see what other hidden gems were there besides the famous delicacy.
Arriving in Jalan Besar, they first made a pit stop at Ah Soon Pan Mee, run by Seah Chong Soon, to fill their tummies before they headed out for further adventures in the town.
Running a small business right outside his home, Seah’s specialty is Pan Mee, cooked in three different ways.
Just a stone’s throw away from Jalan Besar, lies a vast vegetable farm, run by Oh Kim Kwok.
At 72, he is still strong and sturdy. He was more than enthusiastic to take the YNN members on a tour around his farm.
Most of the produce are sold in the Selayang wholesale market.
Back in Jalan Besar, they finally hit one of the oldest Lor Mee stalls in Ulu Yam Lama, run by Lim Piw Swe and his siblings.
It was interesting watching the Lim brothers toil in the kitchen making the yellow noodles from scratch.
