Company gives RM100,000 to charity foundation

Malaysian Assurance Alliance Berhad (MAA Assurance) presented a RM100,000 cheque to the Budimas Charitable Foundation (Budimas) at the Golden Lounge of Menara MAA recently.

The cheque was presented by MAA Assurance chief executive officer Muhamad Umar Swift to Budimas trustee Steve Teoh Loon Heng.

Budimas deputy chairman Millie Kwek, members of the board of trustees, guests and MAA Assurance management and staff were also on hand to witness the presentation.

“Today’s cheque presentation of RM100,000 marks nine fulfilling years of our relationship with Budimas and this special bond will continue for many years.”

From an initial support of two orphanages, Budimas is today able to help shelter more than 500 children in 10 homes in the country, including its own Budimas Orion.

“So far, MAA has contributed more than RM1.9mil in yearly grants to the foundation,” said Umar in his speech.

He added that even in challenging economic times, MAA would continue to lend its support to Budimas and the children.

Teoh, meanwhile, lauded MAA for its contributions and support, saying that their support towards a charitable cause should be emulated by all as it brings benefits to the children.

“It marks yet another milestone for us and speaks volumes about MAA commitment to Corporate Social Responsibility,” he said.

The Budimas Charitable Foundation was incorporated under the Trustees Act 1952 on Sept 14, 1998, and is under the patronage of the Raja Permaisuri Agong.

In 2001, the foundation was adopted by the Melewar Group and came under a new board of trustees.

Budimas supports more than 500 orphaned and underprivileged children in 11 homes in the country.

The homes are Pusat Kebajikan Budimas Orion in Petaling Jaya, Asrama Damai Rumah Anak-Anak Yatim in Kuang, Bethesda Children’s Mission Home in Cheras, Women’s Aid Organisation (WAO) Child Care Centre in Petaling Jaya, Persatuan Kebajikan Darul Najjah KL & PJ, Precious Gift Home and Hannah Home in Ipoh, Persekutuan Kebajikan Anak-Anak Yatim Islam (Perempuan) and the Children’s Protection Society in Penang, St Theresa and De La Salle Hostels in Kota Marudu, Sabah and Seri Mengasih Centre in Kota Kinabalu, Sabah.

Early this year, Budimas undertook an initiative to start their own home known as Pusat Jagaan Kebajikan Budimas Orion at No 21, Jalan SS3/43 in Petaling Jaya.

Budimas has, on its own, carried out several projects to raise funds for the homes.

Among them was the Budimas Annual Charity Raffle, which is held every year.

This year’s fifth Budimas Annual Charity Raffle Draw, which was held in August raised RM765,000 from its sales and saw 100 lucky numbers being drawn with prizes amounting to RM170,000.

Another effort by Budimas would be the Direct Debit Donor Programme, a fundraising campaign through the collection of donations from the public via a deduction from a bank or credit card account.

Meanwhile, through the Direct Mail Programme or better known as “Letter Shopping”, Budimas sends its pleas to the public for their donations and also educate them on its ongoing efforts.

The foundation helps feed, clothe, care and support these children in every possible way to ensure they are given a future of love and hope.
