Educating youngsters on the benefit of exercising their rights

FOR many youths turning 21, registering themselves as voters is not a priority.
“Voting is every Malaysian’s right, so we want to educate youths about it,” said Youth for Change (Y4C) secretariat member Lee Khai Loon.
Lee was a member of the organising committee for the Youth For Change event at the 1Utama Shopping Centre in Bandar Utama, Petaling Jaya, that was aimed at getting Malaysian youth to register as voters.
“There are about 4.7 million people who are eligible to vote but are not registered,” Lee said.
The event on Saturday, which started at 2pm, included performances by local acts Reza Salleh, Robot Asmara, Bittersweet and Seven Collar T-shirt.
There were also booths set up at the Lower Ground Floor Rainforest area selling items like accessories, handicraft and clothes.
Lee said they managed to register more than 300 people as voters during the event.
“From the feedback that we got, some people just did not know where to go to register themselves while some others felt that one fewer vote did not matter,” he said.
Bukit Lanjan assemblyman Elizabeth Wong launched the event.
Wong said there were many issues that youth felt strongly about, like human rights, corruption and the environment, so it was vital that they got involved.
Bandar Utama Development Sdn Bhd director Datuk Teo Chiang Kok was also present at the event.
Teo said it was encouraging to see youths take part in healthy activities and he was pleased to provide 1 Utama as the venue sponsor for the event.
