Creativity goes to the head

FORTY-eight designs by 12 students were displayed on the catwalk in a very glamorous fashion at the Limkokwing Graduation Hair Show 2009 at the university’s Hall of Fame.

The hair show, themed “Creativity Unlimited,” served as the students’ final exhibition, challenging their hair styling prowess in four different categories — Hip-hop, Banquet, Seduction and Fantasy.

The Hip-Hop category gave the students a chance to show their talent at styling cornrows — a traditionally African style while Banquet was to showcase the students’ hair styling techniques for brides.

All smiles: The students after a successful hair show.

The Seduction section predicted the rise of the future cut and colour styles in highlighted hues such as brunettes, blondes and bi-coloured hair of green and yellow.

The Fantasy segment challenged the students’ creativity in avant-garde hairdos.

The hair designs were judged based on the overall presentation ranging from inspiration, hair style, make-up and outfit.

Jellafora Janie, a 19-year-old hair design student from Indonesia, created a stunning life-size, bird-adorned headpiece for the Fantasy segment, inspired by the Cenderawasih bird. “My inspiration is from the animal mascot of my hometown Papua in Indonesia,” she said.

Janie said the Cenderawasih bird, also known as the Bird of Paradise, was chosen for its beautiful multi-coloured feathers around its tail.

The audience was also entertained with multiple performances such as street dances, beat-boxers and break-dances from various countries including Germany, Lithuania, China, Indonesia and Malaysia.

A student from India, Shazia Siddiqui, said that she had learnt a lot during her seven months of study at the university.

She is planning to open a hair salon in Malaysia.
