Selangor Hockey League: SIA make it to the top
By Y.P. SIVAM
SELANGOR Indian Association (SIA) went to the top of the table in Division Two of the Selangor Hockey League when they defeated Polyteknik Shah Alam 3-1 in a keenly contested match at the Pandamaran Hockey Stadium in Klang recently.
SIA, who had demolished JUPEM 9-1 in an earlier match, had the services of former state and national player M. Jayamaran in their line-up.
Despite dominating the match, SIA had to wait until the 21st minute to get their opening goal through skipper N. Kesavamoorthy. Six minutes later, M.K. Edward made it 2-0 for SIA.
Polyteknik were not prepared to throw in the towel and were given a lifeline in the 51st minute when Muhamad Azlan Latif scored a field goal.
Going all out: SIA’s Abdul Rasyid Mohd Ridzuan (left) goes down in his attempt to stop Polyteknik Shah Alam’s Muhd Azlan Abdul Latif. Polyteknik, inspired by the goal, went on the offensive to get an equaliser. But it was SIA who scored in the 61st minute. This time it was Khairilazhar Zakaria who scored to make it 3-1 to SIA.
The win was SIA’s sixth in as many matches. They have 18 points. Two other teams — RAMD Juniors and SMKPP — who have played one match less are in the second and third spots with 15 points each.
This weekend SIA will meet SMKPP at the Pandamaran Hockey Stadium in Klang on Sunday. The match should be an interesting one and SIA will have to win to not only maintain their winning streak but also to win the Division Two title.
In a Division One match, Olak kept their title hopes alive with a hard fought 4-3 win over Projek 11-A. Projek 11 -A, comprising students of the SMK Section 11, the sports school in Selangor, took the lead in the 13th minute through Jazli Haziq Jamalul Ariffin.
After the break, OLAK scored three goals through Abdullah Sani Abu, Nur Hrsikesa Md Murni and R. Dinesh in the 38th, 44th and 50th minutes respectively. Projek 11-A were quick to even the score when Nur Nasriq Farhan Nor Azlan scored twice in the 54th and 59th minutes.
But OLAK had the last say when K. Satish scored the winner in the 63rd minute. However OLAK paid a heavy price as skipper Nur Hrsikesa collected a yellow card and will miss their next match against title contenders RAMD.
Deputy organising chairman P. Kuganesan said the Division Two matches had become interesting with three teams - SIA, RAMD Juniors and SMKPP - maintaining an unbeaten record in the league.
