Thai officials visit Recsam

More than 25 delegates from Thailand’s Education Ministry visited the South-East Asian Ministers of Education Organisation’s (Seameo) Regional Centre for Education in Science and Mathematics (Recsam) in Penang.

Thailand’s Education Minister Jurin Laksanawisit, who led the delegation, also launched the Seameo Auditorium at the centre during their visit on Saturday.

In his speech, Laksanawisit, who is also the 44th Seameo Council president, said the cooperation in improving the education standard of the two countries had been progressing well over the years.

“The need to promote and enhance science and mathematics is a high priority in this region.

“Quality preparations in these subjects will give our students a stronger foundation on which to build as lifelong learners,” he said.

“In Thailand, progress in science and technology is a key part of our strategy for building a knowledge-based society,” he said, adding that the country’s commitment was reflected by the inclusion of these subjects in the 10th National Economic and Social Development Plan (2007-2011).

He also said Recsam would be sending experts to Thailand in March to conduct a training programme in science and mathematics. “It’ll be done in a studio setting and broadcast throughout the country,” he said.

Also present was Seameo Recsam director Dr Azian Abdullah. The delegates later visited the Penang Free School.
