300 gather for inter-faith prayer service
MALACCA: Some 300 faithful gathered at the Roman Catholic Good Shepherd Seminary in Jalan Laksamana Cheng Ho for an inter-faith prayer service.
The 90-minute late evening open-air session themed “Keep Hope Alive,” was organised by the Malaysian Consultative Council for Buddhism, Christianity, Hinduism, Sikhsim and Taoism (MCCBCHST) Malacca Branch for survivors and victims of natural disasters that hit several countries in the Asia-Pacific region recently.
Among the local religious leaders representing the various faiths of the communities here were Ven Ratansari Mahatheva (Buddhism), Giani Harcharan Singh (Sikhism), Rev Fr Christoper Lee (Christianity), Siva Sri Anbu Gurukka (Hinduism) and Master Quak Lal Seng Dao Chi (Taoism).

In his short address prior to the prayer sessions and chants, organising committee chairman Dennis Lee, from St Theresa’s Church, said the service was held to show that Malaysians irrespective of custom and creed cared for their fellow humans.
“We pray that the survivors will have strength and hope to rebuild their lives,” he said. At the end of the prayer session, the religious leaders made a procession with floral tributes in hand. Youth leaders of the various religious bodies rendered their tribute via lighted candles.
Participating in the service was Malacca Chinese Temples Association head Datuk Soon Tian Tsu who commended the organisation for holding such a meaningful event to show solidarity with the victims.
He later joined Lee in mingling with other participants during the supper fellowship. Thousands had been made homeless with scores killed in recent natural disasters that hit Indonesia, Cambodia, Vietnam, the Philippines, Taiwan, Japan, Samoa and India. — By PERCY D’CRUZ
