45 years of helping kids
THE Handicapped Children’s Centre (HCC) Penang celebrated its 45th anniversary with a colourful party themed ‘Sehari Sejati Bersama HCC Penang.’
Held last Saturday to honour the selfless individuals who have contributed time, effort and money to give the children a better quality of life, the celebrations doubled up as an awards ceremony for the centre’s outstanding students.
We can dance: The centre's children performing during HCC's anniversary celebration. It was also an opportunity for the children to have some fun. With their parents, friends and caregivers in the crowd, they went up on stage decked out in colourful costumes performing dances like the Tarian Joget Pahang and Tarian Pom Pom, as well as several musical solos and duets.
HCC president Puan Sri Raihanatul Habshiah said HCC’s sincere and dedicated staff and members helped make it a leading non-government handicapped centre in the state.
“We give every handicapped child who steps into our centre, the opportunity to develop to the best of his abilities.
“As years go by, we have also developed new curriculum to suit the specific needs of our special children,” she said.
Raihanatul added that the centre has gained wide recognition for its teaching methods, to the extent that many students, nurses and young trainee doctors visited the centre to observe the learning process being carried out in its classrooms.

Penang Yang di-Pertua Negri Tun Haji Abdul Rahman Abbas, who was also present for the celebrations, said the special children were as much a part of society as anyone else, deserving of equal treatment and attention.
Later, the Penang Club donated RM50,000 to the centre in a mock cheque presentation.
Also present were Tun Abdul Rahman’s consort Toh Puan Majimor Shariff, State Health, Welfare, Caring Society and Environment Committee chairman Phee Boon Poh and event organising chairman and HCC past president Khoo Kay Seang.
