Local councils ready and watching


All local councils in Selangor are gearing up for the moonsoon season with emergency units on standby.

The councils have emergency rescue teams and equipment to deal with floods.

In view of the current wet season, Star-Metro highlighted the flood and disaster prone areas in Selangor. Among the most flood prone areas are Klang, Selayang, Ampang, Kajang, Shah Alam and Petaling Jaya.

At the Kajang Municipal Council (MPKj), a task force has been formed to deal with floods, landslides and trees being uprooted. The operation team consist of 20 people and the hotline number will be diverted to the officer in charge.

The flood prone areas in Kajang are Hulu Langat Dusun Tua, Kampung Baru Balakong, Simpang Balak and Kampung Baru Sungai Chua.

The Shah Alam City Council (MBSA) has its own disaster unit on standby with 41 personnel.

Flood prone areas in Shah Alam are Taman Mesra Section U1, Sungai Damansara Taman Tun Dr Ismail, Jaya Section U2, Kampung Kubu Gajah, Kampung Melayu Subang, Sungai Plong, Kampung Paya Jaras, Jalan Sungai Rasau, Teluk Menegong and Padang Jawa.

MBSA is taking precautionary measures and checking the flood prone areas. Vehicles, boats, chainsaw, baton lights and other equipment are ready to be dispersed and used.

All available community halls will also be used to place victims during the disaster period.

The MBSA is also working with Alam Flora to ensure that the drains are not clogged and are cleaned according to schedule.

At the Ampang Jaya Municipal Council (MPAJ), the Bukit Antarabangsa area is still under close watch for any mishaps. The Public Works Department is currently carrying out slope stabilising works here.

The council is also using close circuit television, monitoring enforcement officers, hotline information, public information to ensure all is well.

Under the Petaling Jaya City Council (MBPJ), areas under watch are Jalan SS7/2, Jalan PJS6/2, Kg Chempaka, Jalan Seroja, PJS 6/4E and SS4D/10.

For the Selayang Municipal Council (MPS), the flood prone areas are Sungai Pusu in Gombak, Kampung Desa Aman in Sungai Buloh, Kampung Selayang Baru in Selayang, Kampung Sungai Bakau, Kampung Sungai Bakau Tambahan, Rawang town in Rawang.

In Batu Caves, the main flood prone areas are Taman Jasa Utama, Kampung Nakhoda, Kampung Sungai Tua, Kampung Wira Damai, Kampung Sungai Kertas, Kampung Laksmana and the Indian Settlement.

MPS assistant public relations officer Helda Syima Abu Talab said there is 24-hour task force on standby to deal with any natural disaster in the Selayang constituency.

“MPS will provide the technical support while the Gombak Land Office will provide aid like food, water, blankets, pillows and money to victims affected by floods,’’ she said.
