Spectators go wild watching World Cup event in Putrajaya

THE Putrajaya Waterski World Cup Championship, held at the Water Sports Complex in Putrajaya recently, was a big success for the skiers as well as the organisers.
There was a big turnout for the event while the scores were also impressive.
It was a family affair for some who even picnicked at the complex while enjoying the sports.
Others came armed with camcorders and cameras equipped with tele-lens to capture the skiers’ performance.
What a leap!: A contestant jumping over the ramp in the Jump category The spectators went wild as the participants jumped over the ramp and performed some nifty tricks on the water.
There were three disciplines in the championship, namely slalom, shortboard (tricks) and jump, organised by the International Waterski Federation (IWF) and Putrajaya Corporation (PJC).
The organisers were glad with the sunny weather albeit the scorching heat compared with last year’s wet season.
Gravity-defying: A skier jumping from the ramp in the Jump event. In the men’s Jump event, American Freddy Krueger was impressive and won the gold medal for the second consecutive year with a 69m effort erasing his own mark of 60.09m achieved last year.
In the women’s category, the winner was Denmark’s June Fladborg who recorded 48.03m.
In the Slalom event, American Karen Truelove won the women’s category while compatriot Nick Parsons, won the men’s category.
For the tricks event, last year’s champion Marion Aynaud claimed the women’s open title erasing her own record of 7,310 with 8,130 points.
In the men’s category, Aliaksei Zharnasek of Belarus scored 11,470 points to win the title.
The prize-giving ceremony was held at the Maritime Centre in Putrajaya later in the evening.
Except for Krueger and Truelove, all the other winners were present at the ceremony.
