Experts meet on butterflies

MORE than 50 participants from 16 countries were in Penang earlier this month for the 9th International Conference of Butterfly Exhibitors and Suppliers (ICBES).

The group attended the three-day conference from Nov 4, followed by a three-day post-conference tour to the Cameron Highlands.

International Association of But-terfly Exhibitors and Suppliers (IABES) president Maria Gerlinde Blaese said that the butterfly appealed to the people in numerous ways such as through art, mythology and scientific studies.

IABES vice-president David Goh, who is the founder of the Penang Butterfly Farm, said this was the second time that the biennial conference was held in Penang, the first being in 2000.

He said the aim of the confe- rence was to share and strengthen their common objectives and mission to continue the association’s pro-motion of nature awareness and environmental sustainability through their facilities, with emphasis on education.

He said it was also aimed at rene-wing and updating the understan- ding and mutual exchange between the member exhibitors and sup- pliers, and promoting the underta- king of projects for butterfly conservation.
