Goalie worry for Hoisan
By NG WEI LOON
DEFENDING champions Hoisan will need to acquire the services of a reliable goalkeeper for their campaign at the second beach handball tournament at the Bukit Jalil family park in Kuala Lumpur on Sunday.
Malaysia Handball Federation (MAHF) executive secretary Ng Num Thiam said Hoisan did not have their regular goalkeeper Toh Sze Hou in their semi-final match up against NS Boys at the Kuala Lumpur Mayor’s Cup recently.
“The depleted side will have an uphill task taking on the stronger opponents without a dependable goalkeeper. They will need to beef up their defensive formation to stay in the contention to retain the title,” he added.
In the recent encounter, the Klang Valley side comprising experienced players in the line-up went down fighting.
In control: Vanilla Star’s Thomas Chataigner (in white) in action during this season’s clubs league match. Despite taking the lead 4-2 in the first half of 10 minutes play in the match up against NS Boys, Hoisan — led by Yeong Sze Hey — finished as the losing semi-finalists with a narrow 7-8 defeat at the end of the second half.
However, the reigning National Handball Clubs League champions Vanilla Star ended NS Boys’ gallant run with a convincing 12-5 victory in the final.
Meanwhile, Legend were the winners in the women’s section chalking up a 6-4 win over MZH.
For the upcoming one-day meet on the sandy surface, Ng said most teams that featured in the Kuala Lumpur Mayor’s Cup will be joining the occasion.
The sponsors for the tournament hosted by the Putrajaya Handball Association are Milo and Molten.
The organisers can accommodate a maximum of 20 sides each in both the men’s and women’s sections for the knockout format competition.
Each team will have to register five players in their line-up for the four-a-side game. The duration of each half is 10 minutes.
“It is going to be an exciting affair with teams engaging in the fast paced matches. We are also considering setting up two courts at the venue to reduce the waiting time in between matches for the participating teams. Several teams will have more than one team in the fray.
“It will certainly be demanding for the players to cope with playing in the carnival atmosphere on the soft surface under the scorching sun,” said Ng, adding that they have created the tournament to keep the players in shape with a pre-season event as part of their preparation for next season’s clubs league.
