JOHOR BARU: Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM) and Delft University of Technology of the Netherlands will work together in the development of products for the bio-based economy.
UTM deputy vice-chancellor of research and innovation Prof Dr Marzuki Khalid said there was also plans to establish a joint postgraduate programme in the field.
“This will be done with world-class facilities involving industrial biotechnology, biorefinery technology and bioproduct development,” he said.
He was speaking at the signing of a memorandum of understanding between the two universities here on Friday witnessed by UTM vice-chancellor Prof Datuk Dr Zaini Ujang and Delft University of Technology rector Prof Karel Luyben.
Prof Marzuki said the collaboration would have a beneficial impact on the development of the bio-based economy in the two countries.
“The Netherlands government’s vision of a bio-based economy proposes a 30% target in terms of bio-renewable technologies,” he said.
He said that green technology was also high on the Malaysian Government’s agenda to drive innovation-led economic growth.
“It is expected to accelerate our economic growth and reduce Malaysia’s carbon footprint,” he added.
Prof Marzuki reiterated that Malaysia was serious in promoting green technology and renewable energy such as solar power.
“This is proven by the recently-launched National Renewable Energy Policy and Action Plan,” he said.
Prof Luyben said the collaboration was the first and critical step.
“It will benefit the academic and industrial scenes in both countries,” he said.
