Safety measures for motorists

SWITCH on vehicle lights, slow down and only stop at designated rest and relax areas or petrol stations when travelling on the road during the rainy season.

Road Safety Department director-general Datuk Suret Singh said these precautions were necessary as visibility would be poor when it rained and could lead to accidents.

He said there were more accidents when it rained as motorists refused to slow down.

“Drive at low speed and maintain a safe distance from other vehicles,” he said.

“Motorists must also be alert in the event of emergencies like stalled vehicles in front or even landslips which often happen suddenly during a downpour.

“When it rains, the road is also more slippery and motorists must allow for more time to stop,” he said.

A safe distance to maintain during the wet weather is a six-car space between vehicles while in normal weather it is half of that space.

Suret added that applying correct breaking techniques also helped to avoid accidents during wet weather. A sudden break with non-ABS breaking can cause a vehicle to overturn, spin or even have all four tyres locked.

He also advised those with ABS breaking systems to pump the break once before applying to completely stop the vehicle.

“It is best that a driver is vigilant and slows down to notice all signboards indicating accident-prone areas, sharp corners and dangerous slopes, instead of applying sudden breaks,” he said, adding that motorists should not use hazard lights unless their vehicle had stalled.

Suret also advised motorists not to stop near hilly slopes, especially during wet weather, in case of land- slips.
