No casualties in pre-dawn landslide

THERE were no casualties in the landslide that occurred at Km13 of Jalan Ipoh in Selayang yesterday.

Selangor Mentri Besar Tan Sri Abdul Khalid Ibrahim, who visited the landslide area at Selayang Heights yesterday, said this was established with the use of the Smart team personnel and dogs from the K9 unit.

Khalid said a meeting with the relevant authorities would be held soon to find out how the landslide occurred.

He said he would meet officers from the Selayang Municipal Council, Ikram, Selangor State Development Corpoartion (PKNS) and Gombak Land Office to get to the root of the problem.

“We will announce the findings only after the meeting,” he said.

A total of 31 personnel from the Fire and Rescue Department and six dogs from the K9 unit were used to look for victims.

However, no one was found trapped in the rubble that covered the entire road.

MPS enforcement assistant officer Paramasivam Chelliah, who was at the scene, said a broken drain on top of the hill was the cause of the landslide.

“The contractor should have repaired the drain and this would not have happened,” he claimed.

Rawang assemblyman Gan Pei Nei said half of the land belongs to PKNS while the other half belonged to a private company.

Gan urged the Public Works Department’s Hillslope Monitoring Unit to check on hillslope projects and before such projects are approved to avoid future accidents.

“Hillslope development at Selayang Heights should also be stopped immediately until the cause of the landslide is estanlished.

“I am relieved that no lives were lost.

“However, if the landslide had occurred during the morning or evening rush hour, it would have been devastating,” said Gan.
