Students show off their artwork
IN Chung Ling High School, art is seen as a vital part of a student’s education, and exhibitions are held annually to help spur their passion and creativity.
The Air Itam school recently held its 53rd annual art exhibition, organised by the Art Club, which showcased about 300 of the students’ works of various mediums throughout the years. These included watercolour paintings, batik, folios, sculptures and clay figurines.
Students from four other schools, the Penang Chinese Girls’ High School, SMJK Union, St Georges’ Girl School and Chung Ling (Private) High School, were also invited to showcase their artwork during the event on Oct 23 and Oct 24.
Art club teacher advisor Yew Swee Wah said that while subjects like science and mathematics were given emphasis, it is also important to nurture a love for art in the youngsters.
“The artwork are from students ranging from Form One to Upper Six, and we can see that they’re very talented. An exhibition like this is a good platform for them to learn a thing or two and improve their skills,” she said.

Several club members also contributed their talents for a greater cause, creating hand sculpted figurines and anime-themed bookmarks, which they then sold for a token sum to raise funds for the art club’s fund.
Tan Yih Chong said he picked up an interest in anime art while watching movies, reading comics and playing games.
“It’s interesting, and I often draw comic characters for the fun of it,” he said.
Chiming in, fellow club member Chiang Wey Cheait said it had been his interest since his kindergarten days, and appre- ciates the artistic nature of cartoon characters.
