By DASHEER NOH

THE inaugural inter-church charity treasure hunt on Friday and Saturday was a resounding success as the event generated more than RM70,000 worth of donations.

Organised for the Christian community in Kedah, the event received immense response as more than 130 men, women and children participated in the 85km route from Alor Setar to Haadyai in southern Thailand.

Some of the participants came from as far as Johor, Kuantan, Kuala Lumpur and even Sydney, Australia.

The charity treasure hunt was jointly organised by Full Gospel Church, Wesley Methodist Church and Trinity Baptist Church.

Datuk Dr K. Somasundram, a private practitioner in Kedah, flagged off the 33 vehicles from the Full Gospel Church compound on Lorong Tiong, Jalan Telok Wanjah.

The main objective was to collect funds to upgrade and beautify the Christian burial ground loca-ted on Lebuhraya Sultanah Bahiyah in Alor Setar and at the same time foster friendships among church members.

Organising chairman Brother Dorai Raju said: ‘‘I salute every donor who has contributed gene-rously to make this event a success.

“Our plan to work on the burial ground can now be implemen-ted.”

He said: “The cemetery is below the road level and we need to raise its height by at least 91cm to prevent water-clogging.”

Lee Peng Chiat, 63 (driver) and his wife Lee Peh Lam (navigator) of Wesley Methodist Church emerged as the champions.

They pocketed RM500 for the win.

In second place are Endry Lim (driver) and his mother Jenny Lim (navigator) while in third place are Poh Chiau Er (driver) and Ong Gaik Yeok (navigator).
