Students back Starwalk
Raring to go: MBS principal Khor Hong Yin (in green shirt), teachers and students getting the application forms from The Star's circulation executive Soon Chun Keat at the school. THE number of students signing up for Penang Starwalk 2009 is growing with some 200 Methodist Boys’ School (MBS) students expected to join the Dec 13 event.
MBS headmaster Khor Hong Yin, 56, said about 100 students would participate in the 10km walk with their families while another 100 would be walking in one big group.
“I’ll be walking together with the students.
“It’s a great opportunity to spend some time with the students as there is not much time to interact with them in school,” he said.
He added that it was the second year MBS students were walking in a big group.
“We try to encourage the students to engage in sports.
“I’m hoping that we all can finish the walk in about 40 minutes,” he said during a registration drive at the school on Wednedsay.
Form Four student Mohd Zarul Shamir Mohd Daud, who will be participating in his second straight Starwalk, said he would opt for a slower start, conserving his energy for the first 30 minutes and then going all out towards the finishing line.
Former state tennis player Cally Loh, 18, is banking on the stamina her twice weekly tennis sessions give her to get a good placing.
In Butterworth, 75 allied health science and dentistry students from Surya College and the Penang International Dental College (PIDC) signed up for the walk on Tuesday.
Nasirah Abdul Rahman, 20, a foundation in Science student from Surya, said the walk would help them release tension after preparing and sitting for their examination early next month.
“It will be a good avenue for us to unwind and have fun,” her coursemate J. Rineithiran, 18, chipped in.
PIDC’s fourth year dentistry student Simranjeet Singh, 23, from Klang, said the walk would be the first group event with several of his coursemates following their recent return from their two-year twinning programme in India.
Gloria Andrew, 23, from Kota Kinabalu, said Starwalk would be a good opportunity to warm up for the college’s sports day next month.
Penang Starwalk 2009, jointly organised by Star Publications (M) Bhd and the Penang Amateur Athletics Association, is divided into competition and non-competition categories with both covering 10km.
All participants will receive a T-shirt and a goodie bag. Those who complete the walk within two hours will be eligible for a lucky contest.
Competition walkers will be flagged off at 7am by Yang di-Pertua Negri Tun Abdul Rahman Abbas from the Penang International Sports Arena (Jalan Mahsuri) while non-competition walkers will start the walk at 7.30am from SMK Raja Tun Uda in Jalan Tengah.
The main sponsors are Pallas, Eastin Hotel, Milo, 100Plus, DiGi, Malta, Eagle Brand, Spritzer, Magnum, Sunquick and BreatheRight.
Registration is open from 9.15am to 5pm on weekdays, except public holidays, at the Star Northern Hub in Bayan Lepas or the newspaper’s George Town office at 15, Jalan Masjid Kapitan Keling. Entry forms can be downloaded from http://thestar.com.my/starwalk. The closing date for entries is Nov 13.
