Members throng new club building

By HAMDAN RAJA ABDULLAH

MUAR: The new Tanjung Club building welcomed nearly 200 guests attending its Deepavali and Oktoberfest celebration recently.

The clubhouse, located near Jalan Timbalan and not far from the old clubhouse in Tanjung Mas, was filled with merriment.

Besides traditional dishes, including tosai which was prepared hot off the gridle for diners, guests also enjoyed hours of dancing.

Club secretary M. Anbalagan said it was the first time the new clubhouse hosted a Deepavali open house since the state took over the old clubhouse building two years ago.

“Although the new premises is not as spacious as the old clubhouse, we are grateful to the state for the renovation work done here.

“We have one large hall, four karaoke rooms, a meeting room, a family corner and a music lounge for members to relax in the evening,” he said at the clubhouse recently.

Anbalagan said the state government took over the old building as it had wanted to turn it into a memorial for the late Tun Dr Ismail Abdul Rahman.

He said in return, the state provided them a two-storey bungalow and spent nearly RM100,000 on renovation works before handing it to the club.

He said after receiving the building from the state, the club spent another RM100,000 to furnish the clubhouse with the necessary facilities.

Anbalagan also said that the club’s multi-racial membership of Malays, Chinese and Indians numbering about 200 people made it the first 1Malaysia club in the district.

He said besides businessmen, planters, civil servants and politicians, it also boasted many professionals including lawyers and doctors.

The patron of the club is the Tengku Mahkota of Johor, Tengku Ibrahim Ismail Sultan Iskandar while the president is district officer Mislan Karmani.

On the Deepavali open house, he said the club decided to merge it with the Oktoberfest celebration to make the night more cheerful for members and guests.

“The clubhouse is open every day and we organise fun educational activities for children on certain days of the week. We want to attract more people to join the club as members and we plan to make it a very popular and prestigious club in Muar,” Anbalagan added.
