Council to increase inspection of hillslope development during rainy season
By JAYAGANDI JAYARAJ
THERE are no development projects planned near the hillslope at Km13 Jalan Ipoh Selayang which suffered a landslide on early Tuesday morning.
Selayang Municipal Council (MPS) president Datuk Zainal Abidin Azim confirmed this saying that the land, which belonged to PKNS did not have any development proposals as yet.
Temporary measure: Workers working on the gabion wall at the landslide area. “The land is vacant,” he said recently.
He added that all current projects on the higher ground were further away from the place of the incident hence there was no need for a stop-work order.
However, Zainal said MPS would continue to monitor all hillslope developments in its jurisdiction to make sure that safety rules were observed to minimise risks of landslides with the current rainy season.
This included sites with proper water retention ponds, drainage system and silt traps.
“We are always conducting inspections but with the current rainy season, we have increased the frequency.
“Those found flouting regulations will be fined,” he said.
Tedious work: Workers seen covering the landslide area with plastic. Currently MPS is helping the Public Works Department (JKR) to clean the landslide area.
Zainal said JKR was preparing a report on the landslide.
As a short-term measure, JKR will be building gabion walls along the slope and drains.
During a check at the site yesterday, only a single lane was open to traffic on both directions of the affected stretch to facilitate work.
There was a traffic hold-up due to the temporary single lane carriageway. However, this was expected to clear soon.
