MPSJ doing its part in creating awareness on dengue prevention
By SALINA KHALID
AEDES mosquito eggs can lie dormant in dry areas up to six months. The eggs only need a small amount of clean water for it to hatch and become larvae, said Subang Jaya Municipal Council health officer Dr Roslan Mohamed Hussin.
“Usually people would just empty the water without brushing the containers. The eggs could be attached to the side of the containers and survive for almost six months.
Kill them all: An MPSJ enforcement officer conducting a larvaciding exercise on a pile of garbage near PJS7/15 flats. He said proper scrubbing would destroy the eggs.
With the current rainy season, Roslan reminded residents to keep water containers clean and not allow their homes to become a aedes mosquito-breeding ground.
He also added that contrary to popular belief, most larvae were found indoors, especially in water and toilet tanks.
“Most of the time people tend to put the blame on clogged drains or puddle of water outside their homes but we usually find the the larvae inside the house.
“It is important to remember that aedes mosquitoes breed in clear, clean water,” he said.
Since it takes larvae one week to become full grown aedes mosquitoes, Roslan suggested residents to clean all containers both inside and outside their homes once a week.
Roslan was speaking during an aedes mosquito inspection at PJS7/15 flats in Bandar Sunway recently.
Also present was Subang Jaya state assemblyman Hannah Yeoh.
The visit was also to boost awareness on dengue prevention.
The team also carried out fogging and larvaciding (destroying larvae).
Yeoh said the area was one of the hot spots with the highest number of dengue cases in the Subang Jaya constituency.
A total of 350 dengue cases were reported in Subang Jaya this year.
“We can do our part by cleaning outside the residential areas but the residents have to do their part inside the house
“The cleaning activity should also involve the whole neighbourhood,” said Roslan.
