Remedial measures taken, says Syabas

SYARIKAT Bekalan Air Selangor Sdn Bhd (Syabas) and Puncak Niaga have taken remedial measures to repair the broken pipes that caused a torrent of water and mud to rush into more than 50 houses in Taman Cheras Permai, 11th mile Cheras, on Oct 29, they said in a press statement.

Refuting claims by residents that Syabas and Puncak Niaga were slow to act to their complaints, Syabas corporate communications and public affairs senior manager Abdul Halem Mat Som said the two companies had summoned 30 of their workers and their contractors to the affected area as soon as they received news of the burst pipe.

“They were also there to render assistance to the affected residents.

“The roads that were covered with mud were also cleared and everything was back to normal by 3am,” he said in the press statement issued on Nov 4.

Abdul Halem said Syabas had also stationed several of its workers at the site to monitor the situation and to assist the affected residents in cleaning their homes.

“An insurance company that was appointed by Puncak Niaga had also visited the residents to assess the damage,” Abdul Halem added.

The Oct 29 incident caught residents unawares as the water level rose to 0.6m in the housing area near the 11th Mile Cheras.

The incident happened at 6.55pm when many residents had yet to return home from work.

The houses in Jalan Cheras Permai 4 were the worst affected.

The pipes burst due to high pressure

It is learnt that water to the area is supplied from the Langat water treatment plant and it has been operating beyond capacity for several years.

Syabas had informed the authorites that the plant was in need of upgrading due to the massive development in the area.

Abdul Halem also said the plant was shut down following the incident and alternative measures were initiated to ensure smooth water supply to the affected areas.

He urged those still experiencing poor water supply to their homes to call the hotline at 1 800 88 5252.
