THE Penang Government is planning to hold more local and international trade related exhibitions next year, said state Domestic Trade, Consumer Affairs and Religious Affairs Committee chairman Abdul Malik Abul Kassim.

He said they were now planning the event calendar for such exhibitions and hoped it would be available by next month.

“When the multi-million ringgit convention centre, which is expected to be ready in 2011, opens, more trade related exhibitions will be held on a bigger scale,” he said.

“The consultant is racing against time to seek the best design for the centre.

“We hope trade related activities can kick off at the beginning of 2011 at the new centre,” he said after launching the three-day Home Decoration Exhibition (Homedec) ’09 Penang at the Penang International Sports Arena yesterday.

Vincent Lim, president of C.I.S Network Sdn Bhd, the organiser of the event, said the company decided to hold the event twice a year due to the good response.

“Last year, we held it in June. This year, the first one was held in June and the second now.

“Last year, there were about 270 booths, and the business turnover was about RM11mil. For this exhibition, we have 360 booths and we are expecting a RM13mil turnover,” he said.

“There are 130 companies from Penang and Kuala Lumpur that have taken up the booths, and we are expecting some 43,000 people to visit the exhibition over the three days,” he told reporters before Abdul Malik launched the event.

Among the items exhibited are bedding, wardrobe and fittings, electrical and home appliances, doors, windows and roofing, lighting and decorative items, security systems, furniture, carpets, paints, water heaters, interior design, tiles and glassware.

The exhibition, which will end tomorrow, is open from 11am to 9pm.
