A load of hula fun
IT was a night of blessings, fun, feasting and hula dances recently when parishioners of the church of St Francis Xavier in Petaling Jaya were treated to a Seniors Night with a Hawaiian theme.
The seniors night, an annual affair held in conjunction with the UN International Day of Older Persons celebrated in October, began with mass at 7pm followed by the Sacrament of Anointing.
Sway: Hula girls entertaining the audience at the Seniors’ Hawaiian Night 2009. By 8.30pm, the church’s Loyola Hall — which had been transformed into a Hawaiian locale — was packed. Tropical fruit punch and coconut water were served from a Tiki Bar.
The night got under way with a hula dance to the tune of Pearly Shells, after which the seniors were garlanded.
In his speech, parish priest Father Simon Yong said he was overwhelmed by the large turnout and was glad to note that the crowd also included seniors from other parishes.
Entertainment was provided by Vernon Steele (the Rod Stewart of Malaysia) and a three-piece band led by Bernard Gomez. The crowd was in stitches during the “dress me up” competition which saw ladies having to dress their men in grass skirts, sarongs and coconut shells followed by an impromptu hula dance.
The oldest parishioners were also honoured, with a special prize going to Madam N. Wenclas, 95; second place to Paul Chye, 90; and third to Marcus Chan, 87.
