Lions to prance in Genting Highlands

THE biggest and most established lion dance championship in Malaysia is back at Resorts World Genting!

A total of 40 local lion dance troupes will be competing in the 14th Malaysia National Lion Dance Championship 2009 that will be held from Nov 20 to 22, with prizes worth up to RM40,000 for the winning team.

A draw session was held at the Youth and Sports Ministry recently. Present at the event were Deputy Youth and Sports Minister Wee Jack Seng, Genting Malaysia Berhad promotions and entertainment manager Veron Loo, as well as Selangor & Federal Territory Dragon and Lion Dance Association chairman Leong Lik Thong and technical officer Siow Hong Phiew.

“We are excited to be organising the 14th Malaysia National Lion Dance Championship at Resorts World Genting once again. This much-awaited yearly event is now a ‘staple’ event at the resort.

“Being the leading tourist destination in Malaysia, we believe this exciting event showcases Chinese culture at its best and will excite all our visitors.

“The championship is elevated to greater heights with the 40 participating teams and the first-ever double lion category. It is a must-see event,” Loo said.

The 14th Malaysia National Lion Dance Championship 2009 is organised by Resorts World Genting in consultation with the Selangor and Federal Territory Dragon and Lion Dance Association, and supported by the Youth and Sports Ministry as well as the Culture, Arts and Tourism Ministry. Other sponsors include KLM Royal Dutch Airlines and Cotra Enterprise Sdn Bhd.

This time around, the biennial event will be divided into two categories —the Single Lion Category and Double Lions Category.

Featuring, for the first time in the history of lion dance competition nationwide, two lions will be performing thrilling stunts in the court simultaneously, the unique Double Lions Category will guarantee a more challenging and breathtaking competition among the participating lion dance troupes.

“The top three lion dance teams will be representing Malaysia in next year’s 9th Genting World Lion Dance Championship 2010, in which they will be competing against lion dance troupes from around the world,” Loo added.

The preliminary rounds for the Single Lion Category will be held on Nov 20 and 21, while the finale will take place on Nov 22.

Meanwhile, those who would like to catch the Double Lions Category should make their way to the Arena of Stars on Nov 20 and 21; the result will be announced on Nov 21.

The ultimate champion in the Single Lion Category will receive RM10,000, while the first, second and third runners-up will take home RM6,000, RM3,000 and RM2,000 respectively. They will also receive a trophy plus medal.

The four remaining finalists will receive RM1,000 each.

As for the Double Lions Category, the champion will receive RM5,000, while the first and second runners-up will take home RM3,000 and RM2,000 respectively.

The two consolation prize winners will receive RM800 each.
