Selfless acts by noble people
By WANI MUTHIAH
UNDERSTANDING the importance of education for the young, two Malaysians have come together through their respective organisations to help rebuild an Indonesian school destroyed by earthquake in West Jawa.
Psychiatrist Dr Andrew Mohanraj, who is director of the Aceh Psychological Rehabilitation Programme, and Pan-Pacific & South-East-Asia Women’s Association of Malaysia (PPSEAWA) president Datuk Rahmah Abdul Hamid said it was crucial the affected students had a proper school soon.
The right thing to do: Mohanraj standing in front of the rubble, which was once the school. “These children need a proper school as their old one has been reduced to a pile of rubble due to the earthquake which hit their district on Sept 3,’’ said Dr Andrew.
He added that the school located at the Sidangjaya village in the Ciamis district catered to 71 primary and kindergarden students.
“The school caters to 325 families in the village and the school administration is conducting classes in various makeshift locations without proper facilities,’’ said Dr Andrew.
He said his organisation and PPSEAWA hoped to raise funds among Malaysians to pay for the rebuilding of the school.
“We feel it is the right thing to do given that we share very close ties with Indonesia,’’ said Dr Andrew.
Rahmah concurred and added PPSEAWA felt the same and wanted the children to have a proper school.
“We want to ensure that the school is rebuilt with proper facilities so that the students will have a conducive environment to study,’’ she said.
Rahmah added that PPSEAWA Indonesia would also be contacted and informed about the proposed rebuilding exercise funded by Malaysian donors.
Both Dr Andrew and Rahmah are appealing to Malaysians to help rebuild the school.
