RM70,000 raised in ‘Go Bald for Charity’


AN assemblyman in Penang was among 30 people who sacrificed their crowning glory for a good cause – to raise funds for the Penang Adventist Hospital’s Dr J. Earl Gardner Fund, which was formed to help patients suffering from serious illnesses.

Tanjung Bungah assemblyman Teh Yee Cheu surprised the crowd when he turned up at the ‘Go Bald for Charity’ on Nov 1. The event was part of the “Makan Siok Siok” charity food and fun fair organised by the Chefs Association of Malaysia.

Teh, who collected pledges worth about RM4,000, said he felt a cooling sensation after his ‘‘haircut’’.

“Just one drop of shampoo will be sufficient to wash my head now,” he quipped.

Also sacrificing his hair was Penang Adventist Hospital chief operating officer Dr Wesley Toh See Wei who struggled for two weeks before making the decision.

“I ended up having diarrhea but Dr J. Earl Gardner Fund executive committee Low Koh Choon motivated me to walk the talk with him,” he said.

Low’s hair was the most ‘valuable’ when he managed to collect RM22,000 in pledges.

The organisers initially targeted RM50,000 for the event but managed to collect more than RM70,000.
