338 cybercafes sealed in Selangor
A TOTAL of 338 cybercafes have been sealed by local authorities in Selangor, the state assembly was told yesterday.
State local government committee chairman Ronnie Liu said the premises were among 391 raided by the local authorities since the middle of last year.
According to the Entertainment Enactment and Places of Entertainment Act 1195 and Cyber Cafe and Cyber Centre by-laws 2005, Liu said, the authorities had also issued 465 compound notices to the errant operators who had flouted various regulations.
“The Klang Municipal Council led the list with a total of 121 raids followed by Kajang with 101 and Ampang Jaya with 49,” said Liu.
“Some of these premises were closed only after earlier warnings had been issued,’’ he said.
He added that most of the premises were illegal ones while others operated only after submitting their applications.
While not issuing new licences for cyber cafes, Liu said, the state was serious in ensuring that the premises strictly followed the guidelines stipulated in their licensing conditions.
He said the state through its local authorities would not hesitate to close down even the licensed ones if they continued to ignore warnings.
