Pioneer partnership between EU and EAGA
By STEPHEN THEN
MIRI: The European Union (EU) and the East Asean Growth Area (EAGA) groupings have launched a pioneer partnership in an effort to develop green technology and renewable energy.
Also in the agenda are environmental preservation and sustainable eco-tourism projects.
Senior officials from the EU and the EAGA (made up of Malaysia, Brunei, Indonesia and Philippines) met in Miri last Saturday and agreed to start the partnership programme.
Among other things, there were plans to matchmake companies and organisations in EAGA with those in the 27 EU countries to facilitate joint-venture projects in both regions in the four fields.
Pablo Iglasius, representative of the EU Delegation to Malaysia met with Miri Mayor Lawrence Lai and other senior trade officials from EAGA and officially launched the EU-EAGA Business and Technology Partnership.
Iglasius said the partnership was very significant as it was one of 20 global partnerships that EU was having with regional groupings in the world.
He added this joint-venture with EAGA countries was very important because this was the first step towards developing greater co-operation in the development of renewable energy; green technology, ecotourism, agriculture, aquaculture and other sustainable environmental projects.
Through the partnership, EU countries would encourage companies and government agencies in Europe to explore new ventures in EAGA in the eco-friendly sectors mentioned above.
Mayor Lai said Miri would host an international gathering this November and get the participation of prominent companies and corpoprations from EU and from EAGA countries.
