Milo wins again, but kids rule the show

MILO’S invitational side retained the championship title in the 6th Star Editorial Futsal tournament, but it was the tiny tots from the Precious Children Home – featuring in the Star Kids programme – who spiced up the annual event that was full of fun and excitement at the Sports Barn in Petaling Jaya recently.

About 200 people including employees, their children, sponsors and guests, attended the event and turned it into a carnival.

The Star’s group managing director and CEO, Datin Linda Ngiam, was the guest of honour.

Milo proved to be too strong in the 11-team tournament when they defeated Photo in the final. It was their third consecutive championship title.

Not only were Milo undefeated, but their ace Masita Md Jalil was named the best female player of the tournament.

The Subs (Le Tua) made their maiden appearance and qualified for the semi-finals while their goalkeeper N. Thanaraja was named the best male player of the tournament.

However, Le Tua bowed out to the more youthful Photo side on penalties in the semis after holding the former champions to a 1-1 draw in regulation time.

In the end, Le Tua lost out to Editorial Admin in the third placing play-off.

The Sports Desk also had a good outing. Although they lost their opening two matches, the sports boys and girls bounced back strongly to win their last three remaining fixtures. However, luck was not on their side as they lost to Le Tua and Milo for a place in the semi-finals.

The other participating teams included Metro, Editorial Artists, New Media, Staric, Features and IT.

The little ones from the Precious Children Home also emerged as the big winners.

Invited for the first time under the Star Kids Programme, the visitors played under the banner of “Megatron” (named after the autobots of the hit movie Transformers II) as the guest team in the four-team Under-12 futsal competition.

Even though the young visitors lost all their matches to finish last, the tiny tots – led by Aaron Arul and James Raj (barely five years old) – won the hearts of the audience.

The Star Kids Programme for the Under-12 age group turned out to be a hit again with a total of 40 children taking part.

“Ironhide” emerged champions when they edged “Bumblebee” in a dramatic penalty shoot-out in the final while “Optimus Prime” defeated “Megatron” 1-0 in the third placing play-off.

In the end, everyone went home a winner.

The winners received medals and gifts sponsored by Nestle, Figos and 100Plus.

Also present at the event was Nestle’s sports marketing manager Ng Ping Loong and F&N Coca-Cola region event and sponsorship manager Muhd Fauzi Ahmad.

The Star Publications managing editor David Yeoh and group general manager (new media) Michael Aeria gave away the prizes. Also present was the Star’s HR (Industrial Relations) manager Ananda Raju.
