Teenager has to undergo corrective surgery of the spine
By CHRISTINA LOW
DESPITE suffering from a bad backache since the age of 10, Y. Thirupathi Rao had never let it affect the quality of his life.
The 17-year-old who lives in Desa Mentari, Petaling Jaya, is suffering from Scoliosis, an abnormal lateral curvature of the spine.
“During a routine medical check-up in my school, the doctor noticed that I had problem with my spine and it had worsened over the years,” Thirupathi said.
However, the teenager who underwent a hole-in-the-heart operation when he was younger still takes part in sporting activities. In fact the SMK Subang Jaya student often represented his school in the 400m run and also played football with his friends.
“It’s still painful but I love football,” he said.
Recently, Thirupathi, who will be sitting for his SPM this year had been asked by his doctor to go for a corrective surgery to rectify his problem. However, the operation was expected to cost RM20,000, and it is quite a burden on his parents who don’t earn that much.
His father works as a labourer while his mother is a kindergarten teacher and they also have two other school-going children.
“For his previous operation (hole-in-the heart), we sought our relatives’ help but now our relatives have children, too, and are unable to help us,” his father T.Yangatisveloo, said.
The family recently sought the assistance of Seri Setia assemblyman Nik Nazmi Nik Ahmad to help them raise money for the operation that is scheduled in December, right after Thirupathi’s SPM examination.
“We hope the public will be able to lend a hand to Thirupathi in raising enough funds for the operation,” said Nik Nazmi, who started the ball rolling by donating RM500 to the family.
Those who wish to contribute can contact Nik Nazmi’s service centre at 03-7806 3660.
