CM: Intel has no plans to close Penang plants

By ANN TAN

INTEL Malaysia has no plans to close down its factories in Penang.

Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng said his special assistant Jeffrey Chew had contacted some key people in Intel and found out that the report in a Chinese daily was not true.

“In fact, the company is staying on and considering future expansion,” he said during a press conference at Penang International Airport yesterday on Jetstar Asia Airways’ inaugural direct flight from Singapore to Penang.

State MCA economic bureau head Loh Chye Teik was quoted on Wednesday as saying that Intel would be shifting out from Penang in the next three months.

Earmarked for development: The 0.7ha plot next to the KGN flats in Weld Quay.

When contacted, Loh said he got the information from a reliable source.

“I just hope that the state government will put all effort to keep Intel in Penang.

“We have a well-trained workforce. Losing Intel to Vietnam will be a great loss to the state’s economy,” he said.

On the plan to set up a Penang investment and tourism office in Singapore, Lim said he had identified a few places there.

“We hope to finalise everything by the end of the month. If things proceed smoothly, we will be setting up the office by the end of this year,” he said.
