Club offers swimming lessons
By Y.P. SIVAM
THE Klang Executive Club (KEC) has teamed up with Dolphin Sports to revive their fortunes in the local swimming scene.
KEC hospitality division head Valerie Tee said they were impressed with Dolphin Sports’ training programme.
“KEC has the facilities for swimming. But, unfortunately, we have been unable to initiate any training programme due to lack of coaching staff, so the swimming pool has only been used for social events.
Giving feedback: Tee (right) and Kanniappan having a dicussion with the trainees in the swimming programme. “Now we feel the time has come for us to venture aggressively into the development of swimming as a competitive activity.
“Dolphin Sports chief coach L.B. Lee approached us and we agreed to team up,” Tee said.
Lee said it was a win-win situation as both Dolphin Sports and KEC shared the same vision.
“Our primary aim is to encourage children to be involved in swimming. Once we have got them to enjoy swimming, we can focus on motivating them to take up the sport for competition.
“They will have to be committed as competitive swimming is very demanding.
Having a splashing time: The trainees in the swimming programme seem to be enjoying themselves. “Of course, we will not see success immediately. We have to be patient with the trainees and it will take about six months before they can take part in competitions,” Lee said.
Currently, about 50 people, aged between eight and 50 years, have registered for the training sessions. The training sessions are held twice a day on weekdays, with more sessions on weekends.
KEC sports and recreation manager T. Kanniappan said they would also be initiating other activities related to aquatics.
“We expect the swimming programme to be in full swing from August. With the assistance of Lee, we will also be starting scuba-diving, snorkelling and life-saving programmes.
“We want to provide the facilities in KEC not only to our members but also the residents around Klang,” Kanniappan said.
The KEC will be organising a swimming gala next month, to which it will be inviting clubs in the Klang Valley.
Lee said the gala would be an ideal opportunity for their representatives to meet other trainees.
“The gala will be a carnival and the competitive atmosphere will be created,” Lee said.
The KEC’s long-term plan is to groom swimmers to represent the district, Selangor, and eventually the country.
The KEC will also start junior development programmes for squash, badminton, basketball, tennis and volleyball.
Tee said they wanted to play an important role in the development of sports.
