Horse show nets RM17,500 for charity
THE Penang Turf Club (PNTC) ma-naged to raise RM17,500 for charity from the hosting of the successful 15th National Horse Show (NHS) 2009 at Jalan Batu Gantong recently.
The amount was collected from the proceeds of food, drinks and about 100 other items sold during the event.
The items were donated by club members, staff members and friends.
Among those sold were hand-bags, old books, electrical goods, an antique typewriter, a massage chair and a cooking stove.
The show’s consultant Datuk Seri Teh Choon Beng said the NHS was a good opportunity for the club to do its part in helping the underprivileged.
“I’m glad that the carnival, equestrian competitions and trade ex-position during the NHS had attrac-ted a large turnout of visitors,” he said.
Organising chairman Alex Rodgers said exhibitors and judges had sent him letters praising the committee for hosting the best and biggest horse show.
“Mitavite Asia Sdn Bhd managing director Rod Shepherd had said in his letter that the show was the best horse show in the 16 years of events that his company had been exhibiting,” added Rodgers.
He said Malaysian Equine Council executive secretary Datuk Malek Jeremiah had said in a letter that the NHS was “a very successful outing” and the number of visitors to its booth was beyond his expec-tations.
Jeremiah also praised the committee for hosting the Riding in Schools Programme competition for the first time.
More than 60,000 people visited NHS 2009 from June 3 to June 7.
The fun-filled event was jointly sponsored by the Finance Ministry, Malaysian Totalisator Board and Pan Malaysian Pools.
A total of 134 riders from 20 clubs also vied for the RM70,000 prize money in the equestrian competitions.
The competitions attracted 507 entries.
They showcased a participation of 113 horses.
