TASIK BIRU in Kundang is set to become a watersports hub for the Selayang constituency.
According to Selayang Municipal Council (MPS) president Datuk Zainal Abidin Azim, the huge lake is a perfect recreation area for watersports activities like canoeing, rafting, boatings, water-skiing and jet-skiing.
“The 32ha lake is a perfect spot for jet skiers, anglers and water skiers on weekends.
Whizzing past: A youngster doing a test run on a jet ski before the start of the second Kundang Jet Sports Challenge at Tasik Biru in Kundang.. “If there is a watersports event to be organised in Selayang, Tasik Biru will be the venue.
“In 2007, MPS had planned to make a jogging track around this lake but when the new state government took over last year, the plans were put on hold,’’ said Zainal Abidin after the prize-giving ceremony of the second Kundang Jet Sports Challenge last weekend.
Zainal Abidin added that the first Jet Sports Challenge was organised two years ago.
“This year, we had 33 participants from a few South-East Asian countries like Thailand, Indonesia, Singapore and Brunei, making this an international event for MPS. And Tasik Biru is now on the map for jet-skiing.
The event was jointly organised by MPS and Selangor Water Sports Association.
Fun-filled day: Children enjoying themselves playing at the water’s edge in Tasik Biru while admiring the sunset after the competition. Selangor Mentri Besar Tan Sri Khalid Ibrahim, who flagged off the unlimited category, said the state government had always encouraged healthy living through sports activities involving families. “Today, I heard that there is a father and son team competing in the Jet Sports Challenge.
“Sports encourage discipline, competitiveness and family values which should be emulated by all Selangorians.
“I know that this event has created a positive avenue for youths to take up the sports seriously,’’ he said.
Participants in the Jet Ski Challenge competed in four categories – 800cc, unlimited, Beginners and Veteran.
Thailand’s Teera Settura was the only foreigner to clinch the 800cc category while the other categories were won by locals.
Good event: Khalid (standing sixth left in light blue batik) sharing a light moment with official and winners. In the veteran category, Mohd Nazar Omar emerged the champion. Mohd Nurfah Afiq won the beginners category while Ron Tan Kim Guan snatched the unlimited category title.
Adding to the excitement of the challenge were a durian-eating competition, a peanut guessing competition, a colouring competition, a tarik-tali competition, cooking competition, prettiest car competition, pukul bantal competition and a lucky draw offering a refrigerator, a television set and bicycles among the prizes.
Stalls selling local delicacies, titbits and drinks were also set up at the competition area where more than 2,000 people were present to watch the jet skis competing against one another.
