Shift to hip hop pays off
A SHIFT from DJing and remixing trance and techno club music towards the R&B and hip hop genre has given DJ Zoie T a chance to test his skills over the waters at the inaugural All Star Battle 2009 in Hong Kong tomorrow night.
Zoie T will be battling it out against artistes and DJs from Hong Kong, China and others at the Zaza Club to win recognition in the club music stakes.
“All the contestants were selected through the remix works they had done over the past few years,” the Penang-based DJ said.
The all-star battle will feature music ranging from hip hop to R&B and dance and competitions will involve DJ battles, MC Rap contests and a remix battle.
The KL-born DJ is no stranger to competitions of such nature in the local scene, and already has an established career as DJ and remixer.
Also known as Wave Master, he has been in the scene for the past 10 years and now plays at MOIS Club, Penang. By 2003, he had already ventured into the remixing / production scene and then moved to Penang. Although he was originally a trance and techno DJ he now concentrates on R&B and hip hop.
Zoie T was part of the Penang-based hip hop outfit Lazylaze which achieved a Top 10 placing among the best hip hop groups in Malaysia for the 2005 Astro “Blast Off” Season 2.
And in 2007, Zoie T started up a hip hop R&B remix service Asian Urban Series (www.asian-urban-series.blogspot.com).
Zoie T is quietly hopeful of doing well at the competition.
“I’m going there to hopefully win, as well as to share my knowledge, my remixes and to bring Malaysia’s name to the front,” he said.
If by some luck anybody is in Hong Kong this weekend and are interested in checking the event, the All Star Battle is being held at the Zaza Club, 3/F, The Toy Road, 100, Canton Road, Tsim Tsa Tsui, Hong Kong. Visit www.zazaclub.com.hk.
