Fashion landmark
By FARIDAH BEGUM
Since it opened in 1977, Sungei Wang Plaza has remained a favourite shopping ground for visitors and locals alike.
FOR all kinds of everything, so goes the Sungei Wang Plaza motto. And judging by the flood of shoppers passing through its doors daily, it would seem that this three decades-old shopping complex has what it takes to keep the customers satisfied.
It remains a favoured destination for shoppers young and old, and locals and visitors alike, despite the presence of glitzier malls nearby.
Sarah Chan, an accountant from Johor Baru, recalls that Sungei Wang was the place to go to for a bit of rest and relaxation in between studies at Universiti Malaya in the early 80s. As a poor student then she did not have much money to spend but enjoyed browsing through the stores, especially those selling clothes, with her friends. “There were always interesting items to be had and at affordable prices, too,” she says.
Perpetual bliss: Sungai Wang still draws the crowds It holds so many nice memories for her that every time she is in KL, she makes a beeline for Sungei Wang before she hits the other shopping complexes.
Over the years, Sungei Wang has had to undergo various renovations to keep up with the latest shopping trends.
The changes have generally been for the better, however, and these days, it has a more upmarket ambience and trendier offerings, including a fashion runway that showcases the works of young wannabe fashion designers. The runway was started a couple of years ago and is now attracting the attention of foreign tourists. But the prices remain competitive and the range of choices is better than in other parts of KL.
In the past few weeks, shoppers at Sungei Wang may have noticed the various promotions and offers available, in line with the Malaysia Mega Sale Carnival.
Since July 4, shoppers who spent a minimum of RM100 in accumulated receipts on the same day at any of the complex’s outlets (except Parkson and Giant Supermarket) were entitled to participate in the Shop & Win Lucky Draw. Participants stand to win the grand prize, a Nissan Grand Livina 1.6 (AT), and many other nice prizes including health products, air tickets to Europe and Jakarta and shopping vouchers worth more than RM150,000.
“We would like to reward our shoppers who have made Sungei Wang Plaza one of the most preferred shopping centres for the past 32 years,” says K. K Lim, Sungei Wang’s senior manager of promotions and public relations.
It takes only three simple steps to win one of the Shop & Win Lucy Draw prizes. First, come over to Sungei Wang Plaza. Second, spend RM100 and above at any of the 800 shops (except Parkson and Giant Supermarket) here. Third, present the receipt(s) at the Shop & Win Lucky Draw counter located at the Secondary Entrance of Sungei Wang Plaza on the same day.
Shop & Win Lucky Draw ends tomorrow. The winner will be chosen on Sept 6. The Main Sponsor is U-Mobile and the Co-Sponsors are Edaran Tan Chong Motor, KLM Royal Dutch Airlines, OGAWA and MOG Eyewear.
