Man caught putting up Ah Long stickers

By FAZLEENA AZIZ

THE Petaling Jaya City Council (MBPJ) made its first arrest when a man was caught sticking “Ah Long” stickers in SS22/19 recently during an undercover operation.

The man was taken to court and fined RM1,000 under the MBPJ Advertising Bylaw 2007. MBPJ enforcement department head Mohd Fauzi Maarop said continuous action would be taken by the council to curb the loan shark problem.

He also said they would continue with the 24 hours monitoring together with the police since June 23 at high risk areas like Aman Suria, PJS 8 and SS 21, Damansara Up Town.

Checking it out: Mazelan making a call to the number stated on the banner while Tiew looks on.

MBPJ councillor Tiew Way Keng, who heads the removal and placement of advertisement committee, said 23,382 bunting, banners and stickers have been removed since January to June.

Tiew hoped that a solution could be found for this social problem.

“Residents must do their part and inform the council if they see people putting up these stickers.

“We would also like to remind the printers and makers of these banners, bunting and stickers that we will take action against them, too,” she said.

Petaling Jaya District police headquarters head of commercial crime investigation division Deputy Supt Mazelan Paijan said they would gather the necessary information before taking the next course of action.

“From our investigation, we found that the man who puts up the stickers gets about RM30 a day. We called the number given and a man admitted giving out loans but said that he was also just a middleman.

“In such cases, we will ask the telecommunication company to track the people involved,” he said.

The MBPJ also carried out an operation at the Mentari Business Park in Bandar Sunway, where they removed stickers, bunting and banners put up in the area. The Ah Longs have resorted to using a new type of plastic banners.
