Fire destroys factory in Bukit Mertajam
BUKIT MERTAJAM: A pallet-making factory in Kampung Sekolah Juru near here was destroyed in a fire.
No casualties were reported in the blaze which occurred at about 4.45pm yesterday.
Penang Fire and Rescue Department’s operation chief Wan Azmi Ahmad said the fire was spreading rapidly and a major portion of the factory was already destroyed when firemen reached the scene.
He said 40 firemen in four fire engines from Bandar Perda, Bukit Mertajam, Prai and Sungai Bakap were deployed to put out the blaze.
“They were assisted by 35 voluntary fire fighters from Chain Ferry, Machang Bubok, Permatang Pasir, Permatang Tinggi, Juru, and Sungai Rambai.
“They managed to put out the fire completely at 5.22pm. We are still investigating the cause of the blaze and amount of losses.
Factory owner Koay Ah Thiam, 58, said the factory was empty at the time of the incident as it was not a working day. The factory had been operating for the last 10 years.
