Spring cleaning aid
THOSE who carry out spring cleaning to usher in the Lunar New Year celebration at the George Town heritage enclave need not worry about disposing of their bulky belongings.
Some 500 volunteers from various organisations in the area and the Penang Municipal Council (MPPP) employees will arrive at your doorstep to provide free waste collection.
State Local Government and Traffic Management Committee chairman Chow Kon Yeow hoped residents would take advantage of the kind MPPP’s offer to dispose of their unwanted belongings such as old mattresses, cupboards, bicycles and other bulky items.
“Just place them at your doorstep, instead of throwing them elsewhere as this makes things difficult for rubbish collectors,” he told a press conference.
The cleanup was part of the activities held in conjunction with the state’s organised programme called ‘Spring Cleaning @ George Town World Heritage Site 2011’.
The one-day event on Jan 9 will be held from 9am to noon. The areas are divided into five zones.
Chow said the launching and closing ceremony would be held at Penang Chinese Town Hall (PCTH).
He said those who want to discard their electronic waste could also bring them to PCTH.
He added that Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng would give certificates to operators of food premises that attained Grade A under the MPPP ratings in the area.
A lucky draw will also be held for the volunteers. Among the prizes are bicycles, handphones and hotel stay vouchers.
