SM Sains Tuanku Munawir Seremban obtains best SPM results

FOR the second consecutive year, a Negri Sembilan school emerged as the country’s top school when the Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia (SPM) results were announced on Wednesday.

SM Sains Tuanku Munawir Seremban emerged as the best school with 16 of its students scoring straight A+ in all subjects.

State Education director Abdul Halim Abdul Razak said the number of students who obtained straight As in the state had increased from 590 last year to 620.

He said the number of students who obtained straight A+ also increased from 15 to 44 this time.

“Schools across the state recorded better results with many students scoring straight As.

“Schools’ overall average grade (gred purate sekolah or GPS) had also improved by 0.22 points compared to the year before,” he said.

Among the other schools with straight A+ students were SMK Puteri (seven), SMK King George V, SMK Tinggi Port Dickson (four each)

Tunku Kurshiah College (three), SMK Bukit Mewah (two) and SMK St Paul, SMK Seri Pagi, SMK Dato’ Mohd Said, SMK Taman Semarak, SMK Bukit Kepayang, Sek Dato’ Abdul Razak, SMJK Chung Hua Kuala Pilah and SM Sains Tuanku Ja’afar (one each).

While these are mainly schools located in urban areas, Abdul Halim said schools in the outskirts of town and in rural areas also recorded better results this year.

“The gap between urban and rural schools registered a reduction of 0.02 points in terms of the GPS.

“We are very happy with this achievement as we want every student to have an equal chance of succeeding no matter if they are in the urban or rural areas,” he said.

Hailing from Jelebu, Negri Sembilan, 18-year-old Siow Elene may not have been a student in one of the state’s top schools but that did not stop the aspiring dentist from studying hard and scoring 10 straight As in the SPM examinations.

The former student of SMK Dato’ Undang Musa Al-Haj said although her school was considered to be in a rural area, she had dedicated teachers who coached and encouraged students to strive for the best.

“You can study anywhere. As long as you pay attention in class and work hard, anyone can do well. I did not go for many tuition classes either.

“It really does not matter which school you go to. I had plenty of friends of all races and I definitely enjoyed my time in school,” said the former school prefect.

Siow Elene and her classmate were the school’s top students scoring straight 10As each.

The teenager who obtained 6A+, 3A and 1A- said she was proud of her achievement and hoped it would motivate her younger siblings to study hard as well.

“As the oldest, I hope I am setting an example for my two younger brothers to follow.

“Studying smart is the key to success and there has to be balance between work and play.

“I used to watch my favourite TV shows every day but still set aside time at night to revise my studies,” she said.

Siow Elene who counts photography and playing the piano as her favourite hobbies was the president of her school’s Red Crescent Society.

In Port Dickson, SMK Tinggi Port Dickson students Raihah Abd Rahim, Choong Siew Mei, Pang Jing Han and Tan Yee Hong were the toast of their school after scoring 10A+ each while 22 of their schoolmates scored straight As in all subjects.

Their high achievements contributed to the school being named the district’s top performer.

Mentri Besar Datuk Seri Mohamad Hasan, in a text message from Mecca, Saudi Arabia, commended the students for their excellent results.

“I am very proud of their achievement. Education is among the state’s top priorities and I am glad that the hard work and dedication of teachers and students here have paid off.

“I hope that students who are sitting for the SPM exam this year will be inspired to do better and the state will continue to be a top performer,” he said.

A total of 19,475 candidates sat for the SPM in the state last year in comparison to 19,682 the year before.
