Factory partially burnt down after heater exploded
BUTTERWORTH: A chrome- plating factory in Prai near here was partially destroyed after it caught fire.
In the 12.35am incident, the fire is believed to have started after one of the heaters located outside the factory along Lorong Perusahaan 6A exploded.
The flames destroyed part of the building.
State Fire and Rescue Department assistant director (operations) Mohd Razam Taja Rahim said six fire engines, two from Prai and one each from Bukit Mertajam, Bandar Baru Perda, Butterworth and Jalan Perak with a total of 52 firemen, rushed to the factory after receiving a distress call at 12.38am.
When the firemen arrived at the scene, 30% of the factory was destroyed.
Fortunately, nobody was inside the factory.
The area which was mostly razed, was at the production section.
It was believed that some flammable materials were also stored in the section.
A Hazmat team was also investigating whether the factory had stored chemicals which would pose danger to the public following the discovery of several drums outside the factory, Mohd Razam told reporters at the scene yesterday.
The losses and cause of the fire are still under investigation.
