Natural draw
About 25km from Kuantan is the Sungai Pandan Waterfalls. Spanning 11ha, it is easily accessible by main road and a 10-km stretch of paved road. The falls is a popular recreational spot with a spectacular waterfall. It is about 100m high and consists of a series of cascading rapids.
Governor’s pride
Take a glimpse of the former residence of Malacca governors at the Governor’s Museum. It is next to the St Paul Hill in Banda Hilir, Malacca. The 17th century building served as the official residence until September 1996 before it was relocated to Istana Melaka in Bukit Beruang. Parts of the house are on exhibition including some of the personal collections of each governor. Admission is RM10 per adult and RM4 per child. MyKad holders are entitled to 50% discount.
State museum
The Pahang Arts Museum — adjacent to the Pahang Tourism office (Jalan Masjid, Kuantan) is housed in a beautifully refurbished colonial-era mansion. Opened in 2000, it is situated nearby the State Mosque and has six galleries as well as an audio-visual room and a library. Admission is free, and opening hours is from 9am to 5pm (closed on Mondays). For details, call 09-516 1328.
Lake attraction
In the southern parts of Pahang, about 100km from Kuantan and 60 km west of the Royal Town of Pekan lies another of Pahang’s unique attraction — Lake Chini, where 12 freshwater lakes are filled with white and pink lotuses. A host of activities can be enjoyed here such as boat rides and for a fascinating experience, visit the orang asli settlement and take home a unique hand-crafted souvenir.
Book fair
Calling all bookworms this school holidays to the Berjaya Megamall shopping centre, Kuantan as Popular Bookstore is having a stock clearance fair with discounts up to 70% on selected books. Also available are offers on stationery and gifts, as well as book signing until Nov 18. It will be held at the mall’s Cempaka concourse from 10am to 10pm. Admission is free.
Line dancing
Senior citizens who want to learn line dancing may do so at the Johor Baru Senior Citizens’ Association at JKR583, Jalan Petrie. Classes take place every Thursday from 1.30pm to 3.30pm. Fee per person is RM17 per month. For details, call Chee Chwee Kim at 016-717 4345.
Cycling activities
The Kuantan tourist cycling route is open every Saturday and Sunday from 7am to 10pm at Taman Gelora, Kuantan. Open to all cyclists with different types of bicycle. Riders must wear their helmets for safety. Bicycle rental services are also available. Additional activities include medical check-up, physiotherapy treatment, cycling tips, aerobic and guided introduction on the cycling route for tourists. For details, call 09-517 7111/7115
Laughter yoga
Free laughter yoga sessions are taking place at Jalan Rusa 4, Taman Century, Johor Baru, every Tuesday (7am to 7.30am) and Friday (6pm to 6.30pm). Those who wish to join the sessions, please call T.C. Lim at 017-745 5093.

Italian food lovers can drop by the Crocodile Rock, located at Lot 4360-B, Lorong Datuk Mahmud 1, off Jalan Telok Sisek (not far from Annexe Resthouse). It offers a spread of Italian food such as pizza and pasta. Its speciality is the Sunset Pizza with toppings of turkey ham, capsicum, mushroom, olive, garlic and oregano while the popular drink is the fruit punch. For reservations, call 09-567 5707.
Chicken rice treat
New Capital Chicken Rice (non halal) at Jalan Bukit Ubi, Kuantan is a family run stall for over 40 years and still does brisk business during lunch hour. One can enjoy the sticky and aromatic rice with braised and steamed chicken. The accompanying chilli sauce is spicy with a bitter edge from the addittion of calamansi lime zest. Wild boar rendang is also available. Open from 8am to 4pm while the days off are not fixed.
